Sandy

My name is Sandy, I was born in The Dominican Republic

I moved to NYC in 1988 with my paternal family looking for a better life. I attended high school during the week and work at my family’s grocery store on weekend until I graduated. In 1991 after graduation, I decided to move to Salem, MA to be closer to my mom and her family. I lived there until about 1995. While living in Salem I worked at Pediatric Associate as a receptionist and interpreter for the Hispanic community from all neighboring towns.

In 1996 I moved to Marblehead and worked as a Nanny during the week and a Customer Service Rep at Sears Credit Center on weekend while attending Marian Court College. It was not an easy task but I wanted to finish school and have a better life.

In 1998 I welcome my daughter and raised her as a single mother. Being a Hispanic Single Mother in such a affluent and mostly white town has been a bit hard for me as this does not seem to be the norm. Despite living in town for most of my life, knowing a vast majority of people and being involved in many school related activities I still feel like a total outsider in this beautiful town.
